The album was produced by Genesis and Hugh Padgham and features the band's classic line-up of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett. The songs on the album were written by the band members with the exception of "Duke's Travels", which was written by Collins and Padgham. Duke is a concept album, telling the story of a character named Duke who is a "drifter" and a "loser". The album's lyrics are dark and introspective, with themes of isolation and loneliness. The album's music is a blend of pop and rock with elements of funk and jazz. The songs are generally shorter and more radio-friendly than the band's earlier work.
