Návrat éry RUMOURS skupiny Fleetwood Mac do aktivní služby byl v roce 1997 vítanou zprávou. Každý ze tří hlavních autorů kapely - Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks a Christine McVie - měl za sebou sólovou tvorbu, která byla sice kvalitní, ale nedosahovala komerčních výšin skupiny v dobách její největší slávy. A pokus bubeníka Micka Fleetwooda a baskytaristy Johna McVieho pokračovat bez jejich vokálního tria - ponurá deska TIME z roku 1995 s bývalým kytaristou skupiny Traffic Davem Masonem - těžko mohl dopadnout hůř.

Od úvodních tónů skladby "The Chain" na THE DANCE - živém albu a videoprojektu, který předznamenal návrat klasické sestavy - je snadné slyšet, že pětici hlavních hráčů je lépe spolu než bez sebe. Buckingham a Nicksová se pro souhru narodili - on zní, jako by se chystal adrenalinem vyskočit z kůže, a její chraplavý hlas mu dává cíl, na který se může zaměřit. A kouřový doprovod Christine McVie dodává písni ještě větší texturu a hloubku. Posluchači v tu chvíli rozpoznali něco, co jim chybělo, aniž by si to pravděpodobně uvědomovali - klasický zvuk této skvělé kapely.

Kromě známých písní jako "Go Your Own Way", "Rhiannon", "Dreams" a "You Make Loving Fun" dala THE DANCE každému z autorů prostor k představení nového materiálu. "Temporary One" je uptempo číslo od Christine McVie, které klouže po větru akustických kytar a je možná nejvíce optimisticky znějící písní na albu. Buckingham přispívá skladbou "Bleed to Love Her", která zmírňuje své temnější tendence ve prospěch přímočaré popové písně. "Sweet Girl" Nicksové zní ze všech tří písní nejvíc jako by mohla pocházet ze session na konci 70. let; stejně jako v "Temporary One" je v ní spousta vybrnkávání a pořádná dávka harmonie, ale především bylo skvělé slyšet opět hlas Nicksové v čele této kapely.

Vrcholem alba jsou však staré písně, které znějí zcela nově. Buckingham si vzal "Big Love" z roku 1987 a proměnil ji v sólový kytarový trénink s prstokladem, který zní jako z jiného světa a podporuje hlas, jehož zoufalství je hmatatelné. "Silver Springs", béčko RUMOURS, má srdcervoucí náladu, která je podpořena mnoha silnými stránkami kapely, od hlasu Nicksové přes Buckinghamovo sólo až po rytmickou sekci, která vše drží pohromadě.

Když koncert (a deska) končí hlasitým průchodem písně "Don't Stop" (rozšířeným o pochodovou kapelu, která byla přivedena o píseň dříve pro "Tusk"), bylo jasné, že Fleetwood Mac se nezastaví, že jsou schopni pokračovat. Ba co víc, byli ochotni to udělat, rozšířit katalog svých hitů o vystoupení, která nejenže vykouzlila úsměv na tvářích nostalgických fanoušků, ale přenesla skvělou hudbu let minulých do současnosti.

The return of the RUMOURS era Fleetwood Mac group to active service in 1997 was welcome news. Each of the group's three principal songwriters - Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie - had produced solo work that, while of high quality, fell far short of the commercial standards of the group at its peak. And drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie's attempt to carry on without their vocal trio - 1995's barren TIME with former Traffic guitarist Dave Mason - could hardly have gone worse. From the first notes of "The Chain" on THE DANCE - the live album and video that heralded the return of the classic lineup - it's easy to hear that the five main players are better together than apart. Buckingham and Nicks were born for the interplay - he sounds like he's about to burst out of his skin with adrenaline, and her raspy voice gives him a target to focus on. And Christine McVie's smoky accompaniment adds texture and depth to the song. The audience recognized something they were missing at the time without probably realizing it - the classic sound of this great band. In addition to familiar songs such as "Go Your Own Way," "Rhiannon," "Dreams" and "You Make Loving Fun," THE DANCE gave each of the writers space to introduce new material. "Temporary One" is an uptempo track by Christine McVie that is carried by the breeze of acoustic guitars and is probably the happiest song on the album. Buckingham contributes "Bleed to Love Her," which tones down its dark tendencies in favor of a straightforward pop song. Nicks' "Sweet Girl" sounds the closest of the three to the fact that it could have come from a late '70s recording session; like "Temporary One," there's a lot of strumming and a hefty helping of harmonies, but above all, it was great to hear Nicks' voice fronting this band again. The highlights of the album, however, are the old songs that sound brand new. Buckingham has taken 1987's "Big Love" and turned it into a solo guitar workout with fingering that sounds otherworldly, backed by a voice whose desperation is palpable. "Silver Springs," the RUMOURS' B-side, has a heartbreaking mood that's supported by the band's many strengths, from Nicks' voice to Buckingham's solo to the rhythm section that holds everything together. When the show (and the record) ends with the storming "Don't Stop" (complete with the marching band that was used on "Tusk" a song earlier), it was clear that Fleetwood Mac weren't going to stop, that they were capable of continuing. What's more, they were willing to do so, adding to their collection of hits with a performance that not only put a smile on the faces of nostalgic fans, but brought the great music of yesteryear into the present.
