The fourth album from the Steve Morse era surprises with a few oriental-tinged guitar riffs, but otherwise offers similarly polished purple hard rock as the magnificent previous albums Abandon and Bananas. From sensitive ballads in which lead singer Ian Gillan shines, to intricate groove numbers whose rhythm tracks occasionally segue into jazz, to punchy steamroller bangers rarely heard by Brits since the Seventies, the album covers the usual broad spectrum. Without making too much use of its own past, the band moves atmospherically somewhere between slightly brooding melancholic numbers and smiley feel-good guarantors, and technically it's once again on top form.
