Třetí studiové album skupiny "Buhloone Mindstate" vyšlo 21. září 1993 a skupina na něm rozvinula svůj nový zvuk a pokračovala ve stylovém a hudebním růstu.
Na albu se objevilo několik momentů, které ukazovaly, že skupina dospěla. Skladba "I Be Blowin'" představovala změnu tempa, neboť se jednalo o instrumentální skladbu, v níž hrál na saxofon Maceo Parker. Introspektivní "I Am I Be" ukázala, že De La Soul jsou zatím nejvíce sebereferenční. "Long Island Wildin'" vznikla ve spolupráci s japonskými hiphopovými umělci Kan Takagi (Major Force) a triem Scha Dara Parr (SDP). V prvním singlu alba, "Breakadawn", byl použit sampl písně "I Can't Help It" Michaela Jacksona a "Quiet Storm" Smokeyho Robinsona.
De La Soul poprvé spolupracoval s Guruem z Gang Starr na skladbě "Patti Dooke" a ženskou MC Shortie No Mas, která se objevila v mnoha skladbách alba, zejména v "In The Woods". Album zakončila oldschoolová spolupráce s Biz Markiem nazvaná "Stone Age".
Album mělo velký úspěch u kritiků a časopis Rolling Stone ho zařadil mezi nejlepší hiphopová alba všech dob.
