DAVID GILMOUR's new album will be released in time for his 60th birthday on 3 March.DAVID GILMOUR has only rarely made it as a solo artist during his long career, which has been largely dominated by Pink Floyd. "On An Island" is only his third solo album. The first two, "DAVID GILMOUR" (1978) and "About Face" (1984), were released more than twenty years ago, and Pink Floyd's last studio album, the multi-platinum bestseller "The Division Bell" (1994), is now a dozen years old. Despite a sensational reunion at Live8, a permanent Pink Floyd reunion is still in the stars. From the first notes of the sound collage that opens "On An Island", you get a sense of an exceptional musical experience that not only bears comparison with Pink Floyd's best works, but reaffirms the class of solo guitarist and vocalist DAVID GILMOUR. Here he reveals his personal musical vision and a range of styles from folk to jazz, rock to orchestral passages, with his lyrical guitar playing and unmistakable voice running like a red thread throughout the album.Thanks to the participation of renowned Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner, who is responsible for the orchestral tracks, and the brilliant production (co-written by Phil Manzanera, formerly of Roxy Music), the very foundation of the album guarantees virtuosity. This is joined by distinguished guest musicians such as David Crosby and Graham Nash (harmony vocals), Robert Wyatt (cornet), Georgie Fame (Hammond), Jools Holland (piano), Caroline Dale (cello) and Alasdair Molloy (glass harmonica). Pink Floyd's Richard Wright (Hammond organ) is also involved in the album's preparation, and one of the big surprises is the participation of guitarist Rado "Bob" Klose, who was one of the early members of Pink Floyd. The soul of the album is, of course, the voice and great guitar work of DAVID GILMORE, but he made sure that the album never sounded too bombastic, but was above all a very contemplative work, to which the lyrics contribute decisively.
