The Man Who Sold the World is the third studio album by English singer David Bowie , released on 23 November 1970 by Mercury Records. It was Bowie's first album after his departure from Tin Machine. The album was originally titled "The Man Who Sold the World" after the song of the same name, but Bowie was persuaded by his record company to change the title to avoid confusion with the Nirvana album of the same name. The album was produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti and co-produced by Mick Ronson and Ken Scott. Upon its release, The Man Who Sold the World was met with mixed reviews from music critics who were unsure of its genre, but it was commercially successful in the United Kingdom, reaching number three on the UK Albums Chart. The album has seen several reissues, including a remastered edition by Bowie and Visconti in 1994 and a deluxe edition in 2010. In 2014, a reissue of the album was released as part of the Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976)". The album The Man Who Sold the World has been cited as an influence on several musical genres, including heavy metal, glam metal and others.
