Charles Mingus (b, p); Eric Dolphy (as, cl); Booker Ervin (ts); Ted Curson (tp); Bud Powell (p); Dannie Richmond (dr) It's safe to say that jazz fans in 1960 were unfamiliar with Charles Mingus' LPs "Blues And Roots" and "Mingus Ah-Um" when they descended on the Pinede Gould Arena in Antibes on July 13. Anyway - as you can see in the short video - the hall was packed. Mingus also brought Eric Dolphy and Booker Ervin, both top saxophonists. In addition, there was a solid trumpeter whose name later became known in Europe: Ted Curson. The missing pianist on one track was filled in by a French legend, surprise guest Bud Powell. The Jazz Workshop - as Mingus called his working formation - featured repertoire that all the musicians knew well: "Better Git It In Your Soul," "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting," and Dolphy's gorgeous bass clarinet solo in "What Love?" There was "Cry For Freedom" as "Prayer for Passive Resistance" and "Folk Forms," also titled "Ummh." He and his guest respectfully agreed on the standard "I'll Remember April," during which the audience could properly celebrate Powell's improvisation. Charles Mingus was to play many more concerts in the '60s and '70s, record more than two dozen official LPs, accuse some promoters and tour managers of predatory racketeering, and stomp his foot on illegal tape recorders. But this recording for the ORTF, officially released years later as a double album on Atlantic and now reissued many years later, is a rare, musically-historically significant period document. This Speakers Corner production was produced using 100% analog mastering and taping. All licenses and GEMA fees have been paid.
