What is certain is that this 1959 recording represents the relatively straightforward bassist Mingus as a composer and leader. The individual pieces are very different, yet accessible at any time. With the gospel-inspired opening track Better Git it in Your Soul, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, a slow obituary for Lester Young, who had died shortly before, and Fables of Faubus, a musical parody of the Arkansas governor, three tracks have become jazz classics in their own right.
