Critics argue over whether Ah Um or The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is the definitive Mingus album. What is certain is that this 1959 recording represents the relatively straightforward bassist Mingus as a composer and leader. The individual pieces are very different, yet accessible at any time. With the gospel-inspired opening track Better Git it in Your Soul, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, a slow obituary for Lester Young, who had died shortly before, and Fables of Faubus, a musical parody of the Arkansas governor, three tracks have become jazz classics in their own right.
