Burzum is a black metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed in 1991 by Varg Vikernes. The band's name is derived from the name of a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Burzum' early work is characterized by a raw sound that is often compared to the early work of Darkthrone. Burzum 's first album Philosopher was released in 1996. The album is considered a classic of black metal and is cited as an influence by many bands in the black metal scene. Philosopher is a dark and atmospheric album and is often cited as one of the most important black metal albums ever released. The lyrics on the album are written by Varg Vikernes and deal with topics such as nature, philosophy and religion. The album's title is derived from the Latin word "philosophia", meaning "love of wisdom". The album cover was designed by Kristian "Necrolord" Wåhlin.
