Burzum is a black metal solo project of Varg Vikernes, which was formed in 1991. The project is named after the word "burzum" from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, which translates to "darkness" in Sindarin. Vikernes is the only member of Burzum . Burzum 's first album, Burzum / Aske, was released in 1995. The album was recorded in a prison cell and was Burzum's only released album until 2009, when Vikernes was released from prison. The album was re-released in 2007 with a bonus track. Burzum / Aske is a black metal album and is considered a classic in the black metal genre. The album is dark and atmospheric, it is a raw and primal record.
