Black Sabbath's Paranoid, released in 1970, is often cited as one of the best and most influential heavy metal albums of all time. The album's title track is one of the band's best known and most popular songs, and the album itself is considered a classic of the heavy metal genre. Paranoid was the band's second album, following their debut released in 1969. Like its predecessor, Paranoid was recorded in London and produced by Rodger Bain. The album artwork was created by artist Joe Petagno, and the album's title track was written by guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler and is based on the novel The Collector by John Fowles. The lyrics deal with the fear of imprisonment and torture. The song was released as a single in the UK in November 1970 and reached number four in the UK singles chart. The song Paranoid was also released as a single in the US but did not chart. Other album tracks include "War Pigs" and "Iron Man", which are also popular and well-known. "Iron Man" was written by Iommi and Butler and is based on the song "Iron Man".
