Arctic Monkeys' debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was released on 23 January 2006 in the United Kingdom. The album was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. The album's title track was inspired by the book Whatever: The True Story of a Manchester Punk by Tony Fletcher. The lyrics are about the Manchester music scene. The song "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" was the band's first single to reach number one in the UK charts.
