New in familiar tones
When Alan Parsons ended a decade and a half of radio silence with the release of "The Secret" three years ago, fears that there would be a long wait - if ever - for his next album were not entirely unfounded.
But now, thankfully, after a not-so-long "standard waiting period", the British progressive rock master gives us his next effort, "From The New World".
The intro of the first track "Fare Thee Well" starts with a guitar ostinato, followed by chords announced by drums and a string crescendo that brings to life the typical Parsons atmosphere. Shortly after, the vocals kick in and immediately raise a curious, almost incredulous question: how is it possible that this now seventy-three-year-old man is still singing with virtually the same unchanged, young and crystal clear voice as he did decades ago?
Other songs like "The Secret", "Uroboros" or "Goin' Home" could immediately pose another riddle, namely how an artist can come up with so many vocal melodies. That is and remains the mystery of Alan Parsons.
However, the overall sound on "From The New World" is no quantum leap, but rather comes across as strongly nostalgic, for example with a rather flat drum sound from the seventies.
The long list of guest musicians makes Parsons' new album no less interesting. He relies here on proven professionals from his legendary The Alan Parsons Project, but also on younger and even lesser-known talents such as Tabitha Fair (vocals) and James Durbin (vocals/guitar).
Notable is the cover version of "Be My Baby" as the eleventh and final track of the album, "From The New World". Alan Parsons isn't necessarily known for cover versions, and certainly not ones that are close to the original, but "Be My Baby" with female vocals became just such a song. This beautiful song at the end can clearly be seen as a tribute to The Ronettes.
"From The New World" is available now on CD and LP.
(Good Times, August/September 2022).
Album spans genres Rock, Pop and Symphonic Rock.
