Rev. James Cleveland

Gospel Music Legend

Reverend James Cleveland was a transformative figure in the genre of gospel music, known for his rich baritone voice and dynamic style of directing choirs. Born on December 5, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, Cleveland began his musical career as a young boy at the Pilgrim Baptist Church. He worked closely with Thomas A. Dorsey, who is considered the father of gospel music. Throughout his career, Cleveland introduced many elements of traditional black gospel music to wider audiences and played a significant role in its evolution.
