Supertalentované Arethě Franklinové bylo právě 18 let, když natočila album Aretha s kapelou The Ray Bryant Combo. Toto album z roku 1961 bylo jejím prvním vydáním u společnosti Columbia a obsahuje její coververze řady jazzových a popových standardů. Byl to materiál, na kterém bylo postaveno Arethino soulové království a její jedinečný osobní styl. Producent John Hammond se držel vzorce, který kdysi předepsal svému "objevu" Billie Holiday: standardy a blues s jazzovou rytmickou sekcí plus horny a "head charts".

Aretha obsahuje singly "Love Is The Only Thing", "Won't Be Long" a "Are You Sure". K dostání v limitované edici 2000 jednotlivě číslovaných kopií na průsvitném, červeně zbarveném vinylu.
