Ralph Downes

Ralph Downes

Ralph Downes (1904–1993) was a prominent British organist and organ designer, rather than a recording artist known for producing albums. He was best known for his role in the design of the organ at the Royal Festival Hall in London, which was completed in 1954 and is considered one of his major achievements. Downes held the position of organist at the Brompton Oratory in London for many years and was influential in the organ reform movement in Britain, advocating for a return to classical principles of organ construction and voicing. He also served as a professor at the Royal College of Music, where he taught organ. While he may have made recordings during his career, he is not primarily recognized for album production but rather for his contributions to organ music performance and instrument design.
