Pauline Oliveros

Pauline Oliveros

Pioneering American avant-garde composer and accordionist

Pauline Oliveros was an American composer, accordionist, and a central figure in the development of experimental and post-war electronic art music. Born on May 30, 1932, she was a pioneer in her field, known for her use of technology and her theories on "deep listening," a practice she described as an aesthetic based upon principles of improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation. Oliveros's work often emphasized the importance of listening and sonic awareness. Her career spanned over six decades during which she influenced a wide range of musicians and artists.
