J.m. Leclair

J.m. Leclair

Baroque French Violinist and Composer

Jean-Marie Leclair (1697–1764) was a prominent French Baroque composer and violinist, often considered the founder of the French violin school. His compositions were influential in the development of violin technique and sonata form in France. Leclair was born in Lyon and initially trained as a dancer and lace-maker, but he turned to music and studied violin in Turin with Giovanni Battista Somis. His career as a violinist took him to various European courts, where he gained fame for his playing.
