"Grace" remains the first and only studio album by California singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, who died in a swimming accident in 1997 at the age of just 31. The album consists mostly of ballads that give Buckley's voice, which reaches more than four octaves, plenty of space and show him at his full best. His song material sounds like a mix of Robert Plant and Van Morrison, complete with three cover versions. Buckley's rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is now considered by many to be the most successful version of the title track. Jeff Buckley was born in 1966 in Anaheim, California - his parents had just finished high school at the time. However, he barely knew his later famous father, folk singer Tim Buckley, who died in 1975. His mother separated and took little Jeff with her. He grew up near New York City, taught himself to play guitar, and after graduating from school decided to study music and art in Los Angeles. After returning to New York, he performed at many clubs in the East Village, including the "Sin-é" club, where he was discovered by a talent scout from Columbia Records. After his first EP "Live At The Sin-é", his CD "Grace" was released in 1994, produced by producer Andy Wallace in Woodstock. In addition to Jeff's songs, it also features cover versions, including "Corpus Christi Carol" by Benjamin Britten and "Hallelujah" from the pen of Leonard Cohen. With songs full of melancholy and longing, this truly moving musical work blends an amazing array of musical roots. Jeff Buckley was awarded the prestigious French Grand Prix International Du Disque in 1995 for his song "Grace" - preceded by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, Yves Montand, Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel. The success lasted two years - then Jeff Buckley died in May 1997 in a tragic swimming accident in the Mississippi floods.
