Martin Luther used this phrase to illustrate what happens when people pray: they formulate fears, needs, and desires, structuring their days and years, and have done so for millennia. For almost as long, prayers have inspired music. Throughout the ages, composers have set prayers to music: the current CD features works by Gioachino Rossini, Peter Cornelius, Max Reger and Francis Poulenc, among others.
