London-based label Honest Jon's Records has once again a musical and historical treasure from Africa. From His Master's Voice (HMV) label's vast collection of recordings and over 400 shellac records, 35 recordings from Uganda and Kenya from the 1930s to the 1950s have been selected. Most of the songs are simply accompanied by stories of everyday life between Nairobi and Kampala. The first song ("Wireless"), for example, describes very vividly, to the rhythm of ndingidi (one-sided violins), what was happening in the Ugandan capital when radio arrived. In some of the songs you can already hear the influence of American country and Congolese music, as well as the harmonies of Christian church music and Indian and Arabic influences. Last but not least, you may be surprised by the haunting sound of Ugandan ensembles. The whole thing is voiced (Abbey Road Studios) with detailed notes, translations (in English) and many photographs.
