That's a great idea: Christmas in romantic choral arrangements. When performed with precision and stylistic assurance by the Norddeutscher Figuralchor under Jörg Straube in the purest a cappella culture, we can look forward to performances that are as contemplative as they are sonically beautiful. At the beginning of the 20th century a number of songbooks appeared to promote sacred and secular choral singing. In 1915, the Volksliederbuch für den gemischten Chor (Book of Folk Songs for Mixed Choirs) was published in Leipzig, and in 1928, for the first time, the Volksliederbuch für die Jugend (Book of Folk Songs for Youth). The Norddeutscher Figuralchor drew on these two collections and other publications to compile this Christmas CD. "In dulci jubilo", "Schlaf' mein Kindelein", "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" and "Silent Night"..... It is fascinating to relive these familiar Christmas carols with romantic depth. It's no wonder when names like Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Alban Berg and Max Reger adorn the sheet music. But even names like Carl Herner, Friedrich Silcher and Felix Woyrsch hide musical gems that are a joy to listen to.
