The film revolves around Swanson (Tim Heidecker), who spends his days with a bunch of hipsters in Brooklyn, indulging in random violence and assuaging his boredom. Disgusted and disillusioned, he finds himself in a series of situations that either forgive or damn him. Rick Alverson's portrait of a white man on the verge of a breakdown is a relentlessly thought provoking and disturbing look. A tale with a call to caution in the autumn of the American era. With his like-minded friends (Tim and Eric star Eric Wareheim, LCD SOUNDSYSTEM frontman James Murphy and Cmeidan's Gregg Turkington), Swanson engages in uncomfortable banter and feigned seriousness. When Swanson gets his inheritance in his sights, he breaks out of his sheltered, standardized life even more and tries to push the boundaries in every situation. Director Alverson, in collaboration with Jagjaguwar, has assembled a soundtrack full of haunting, bittersweet and mystical pop songs from current (GAYNGS, GARDENS & VILLA, HERE WE GO MAGIC) and past artists (DONNIE & JOE EMERSON, BILL FAY, AMANAZ).
