On a triple vinyl album, Soundway Records presents 32 selected recordings from East Africa from the 70s and 80s. For all fans of African music, this is a treasure trove of rare and unusual tracks, many of which have only been released as original vinyl singles. In the tradition of the label's "Special" series (successfully dedicated to the highlife and afrobeat scene in Nigeria and Ghana), there are detailed liner notes and plenty of reproductions of artwork and photographs. Stylistically, the compilation focuses on rumba and benga styles. The latter, with its 4/4 rhythm and overlapping electric guitars, was Kenya's contribution to Afropop in the early 1970s. The Congolese variant of Afro-Cuban rumba made its way into the country through the many bands that settled in Kenya after the tour. In addition, they were influenced by many hotel musicians who incorporated rock'n'roll riffs and West African elements into their music.
