Karajan's first recording of Verdi's Requiem was made at a time when his career was struggling to recover. The echoes of the war resonate in it, as does the uncertainty of the post-war period. The expressiveness and spontaneity of this interpretation also reveal a conductor who knows his audience as well as he knows his musicians. This concert recording was made in 1949 at the Salzburg Festival and features some of the outstanding soloists of the time: Hilde Zadek, who was engaged at a very young age at the Vienna State Opera, Margarete Klose, whom Furtwängler also held in high esteem, Helge Rosvaenge, the busiest tenor of those years, and the great Boris Christoff. This production is once again accompanied by a producer's commentary - that is, producer Ludger Böckenhoff's direct impression of the treatment of this historical sound material.
