The soundtrack to Dreamgirls (2006) was written 25 years after its Broadway premiere. The musical tells the story of a soul trio, and not coincidentally, it resembles the story of the Supremes, a group that was one of the main drivers of Motown Records sales in the 1960s with Diana Ross as frontwoman. The film stars Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role. The music is, of course, soul in all its glory, and Eddie Murphy's numbers are particularly surprising.
