Produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, it was the band's first album with producer Steve Lillywhite and was a critical and commercial success, becoming the fastest selling album in British history at the time. The album was U2's first to reach number one in the United States, where it spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. The album won the 1988 Grammy Award for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
