Transatlantic have never been a band to resist a challenge. So it's no surprise that Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas and Mike Portnoy are doing something unusual on their fifth album. "We thought of something unprecedented," Portnoy said proudly. "We have two versions of the album. There's a 2-CD version ('Forevermore') that's 90 minutes long, and a single-CD version ('The Breath Of Life') that's 60 minutes long. The single CD is NOT an edited version of the double CD. These are new recordings. We used different approaches to the songs to create them! We wrote new lyrics and different people sing on the single CD version than on the double CD version. We reworked the songs to make the two versions different." Also on this record, the band returned to the concept album format, "The album is basically one big song, divided into chapters. The storyline is about the struggles and strivings that everyone faces in today's society," comments Portnoy. "We didn't start out with the idea of a concept album," admits Stolt. "The way it works is that we have a lot of ideas that spontaneously come up when we get together. Everything happens in the moment." For Trewavas, Absolute Universe is a significant project. "I think it ranks among the best albums we've ever released."
