The "ska" revival with its fast Caribbean rhythms that broke out on a narrow front in England in the summer of 1979 was actually small and manageable in terms of the number of bands involved - in fact, there are only four names to mention, all more or less racially mixed: Madness, The (English) Beat, Selecter and above all, of course, SPECIALS as pioneers, stalwarts, founders of the 2-Tone label and also political spokesmen. All the greater is the success and influence of this group quartet, which they achieved with countless singles and various albums up to the mid-80s, as well as various successor formations (including Fun Boy Three, Colourfield, General Public, Fine Young Cannibals). Last but not least, it was SPECIALS, temporarily renamed Special A.K.A., who drew attention to the fate of the imprisoned South African ANC leader with their world-famous anthem "Free Nelson Mandela" in early 1984.
