The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually selling over four million copies in the United States. Four singles were released from it, including the chart-topping "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "1979". The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
