The Mamas & the Papas group consisted of John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, a songwriter, musician and bandleader who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. The Mamas & the Papas released five studio albums and 17 singles in four years, six of which reached the Billboard Top 10, and sold nearly 40 million records worldwide. Their best-known singles include "California Dreamin'," "Monday, Monday" and "Creeque Alley." Building on gorgeous four-part harmonies, charming semi-acoustic melodies and the brilliant songwriting of leader John Phillips and the distinctive voices of Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips, the quartet created a sound that still gives you goosebumps when you listen to it.
