Eight months after his successful collaboration with Miles Davis on Kind of Blue, Evans recorded Portrait in Jazz with a new group (the Bill Evans Trio), an album that helped change the course of modern jazz. Most notably, LaFaro's bass guitar shifted from a mere accompaniment instrument to one almost equal to the piano (though not to the extent of later albums like Sunday at the Village Vanguard). This is one of Evans' more spirited and brisk albums (despite a few ballads).
