The album contains traditional Christmas songs as well as original material written by the band, including the title track. The album was the band's first release on Capitol Records and was produced by Brian Wilson. The album was met with mixed reviews from music critics, but was commercially successful and placed third on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping one million copies in the United States. The album has been re-released several times, most recently in 2012 as part of the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary celebration.
