An inspired solo debut from Sufjan's guitarist - for fans of Feist and Cat PowerSt. Vincent writes cinematic pop epics that could be the soundtrack to 1920s Paris. Or, conversely, an orchestra full of pure modernism - with influences from jazz, gospel blues, Southern folk music and classical pieces - all make up her unique style. "Marry Me," her album debut on Beggars Banquet, is a cleverly arranged smorgasbord of guitar, bass and pulsating beats, accompanied by Annie's elegant soprano. Horns and strings sweep over digital keyboard sounds, and there are hints of choral singing in the background. The songs start energetically, turn into ornate post-noise rock constructions, and mostly end quietly and gently, with St. Vincent playing most of the instruments himself, assisted on piano by longtime David Bowie pianist Mike Garson and Astro-Man's Brian Teasley.
