When Queen began recording Innuendo in March 1990, they probably realized that their fourteenth studio album would be their last with singer Freddie Mercury. Their swan song. He has known about his AIDS illness since April 1987 at the latest; rumors and speculation have been refuted, denied, wiped away by him, the band and the entire community. No later than the Brit Awards on 18 February 1990, where Queen were honoured for their outstanding contribution to British music, it was obvious that Mercury was very, very ill. He attributed it to long tours and stressful music-making, but it was his last public appearance.The album was released on 4 February 1991, delayed by Mercury's health problems. Queen sound stronger than before, returning to the anthemic, bombastic sound of the seventies. "Strangely enough, we had a lot of fun making the album," says Roger Taylor years later. "We adapted to Freddie and were able to work on the songs a lot more and strengthen them." Justin Shirley-Smith, who was the assistant behind the controls during recording, also has fond memories of the sessions. "It's hard to explain, but it wasn't sad, it was actually very joyful. Freddie was one of the funniest people I've ever met. I laughed with him most of the time." Mercury wants to finish this album more than anything. He knows it: it's his legacy.
