"A Salty Dog" is the third studio album by English progressive rock band Procol Harum, first released in 1969. "Salty Dog" shows a slight change in direction from its predecessors, which were more darkly themed. The title track was their first track with an orchestra, which was reflected in the album's live performance three years later. Bruce Eder of AllMusic writes in his retrospective review, "On this album, they showed just how far their talents stretch across the musical landscape, from blues to R&B to classic rock. It's unlike a hastily recorded debut or follow-up album that was made to stretch their performances and songs", with the title track being described as "one of the most beautiful songs ever to come from Procol Harum, and one of the best progressive rock songs ever".
