With "Werewolves Of Portland", Paul Gilbert's sixteenth solo studio album is off to a flying start. And Gilbert has once again set the bar very high. Gilbert's original plans were scuppered by Corona, his solution was simple but effective and also allowed him to showcase his great instrumental prowess. He recorded all the instruments himself in his studio. "Werewolves Of Portland" is a remarkable album. It sounds fresh, vital and takes the listener on a wonderful journey. For Gilbert, it is an evolution of a process that began on his previous album. "The process of first writing the lyrics, then the melody, then the guitar, and then backing it all up with other instruments is an amazing thing I've discovered for myself. On 'Behold Electric Guitar' it really came together for the first time," Gilbert says of the album's creation. "Werewolves Of Portland" came about in a similar way. It's a much more traditional way of writing, which I've tried to avoid for most of my career, because rock 'n' roll is about being unconventional. But it seems to me that songwriting works much better when I try to think like Burt Bacharach and not like a teenage shredder. I still enjoy adding energy to the music by sporting the guitar."
