By the age of 22, Otis Redding had already demonstrated the maturity of his distinctive raspy voice, which has served as a benchmark for soul ever since. His first album, 1964's Pain In My Heart, contained "These Arms Of Mine," his first hit from 1962, and his versatility is evident in a very diverse selection of material, including Rufus Thomas' "The Dog," Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" and Little Richard's "Lucille." He is backed by Stax Records house band Booker T.&The MGs and the horny Mar-Keys. The album foreshadowed Redding's illustrious career, which unfortunately lasted only three short years after the release of Pain In My Heart.
