The album was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England and The Hit Factory in New York City. It was produced by New Order and Stephen Hague. The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and number 33 on the US Billboard 200. The album spawned four singles, "Bizarre Love Triangle", "Blue Monday", "The Perfect Kiss" and "True Faith". The album Brotherhood was generally well received by music critics. In a contemporary review for The Village Voice, Robert Christgau stated that the album "does not maintain the perfection of its predecessors", but nevertheless found it "a pleasure to hear these guys work within their limits". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic said in a retrospective review that the album "doesn't have the impact of their first two albums, but it's still a strong record that shows the band moving in new directions".
