"Sketches Of Spain" is one of Miles Davis's most melodic compositions, and thus proved to be one of the most accessible and less improvised, breaking away from strict notions of jazz. It is one of four albums on which Davis and Gil Evans collaborated with a small orchestra of horns and percussion. "Sketches Of Spain" is in the spirit of Spanish melodies - Joaquín Rodrigo's "El Concierto de Arajuez" and Manuel de Falla's "El Amor Brujo" - that fascinated Davis so much that he had to tap into them, while Evans paints a musical picture of a country he had never been to. Davis himself says, "It's music, and I like it."
