Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is one of the most influential jazz albums of all time. Released in 1959, the album features Davis on trumpet alongside John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly. The album was recorded in a single session and the musicians improvised based on sketches of melodies provided by Davis.The album's influence is evident in the work of later jazz musicians and in other musical genres. Kind of Blue is often cited as the first jazz album to feature modal jazz, a style of jazz that eschews chord progressions in favor of scale-based melodies. The album has been praised for its lyrical and emotive playing and is considered a classic of the jazz genre.
