Miles Davis : Jack Johnson (Original Soundtrack Recording) is an album released in 1971 by Miles Davis . The album was recorded as the soundtrack to the 1970 film of the same name, directed by John Schlesinger and starring boxer Jack Johnson. The album was Davis' first release after his departure from Columbia Records in 1969 and his first with Warner Bros. Records. Davis assembled an extensive band for the album, which included guitarists George Benson and John McLaughlin, organist Herbie Hancock and drummer Billy Cobham. The album contains long improvised jazz pieces and has been described as "a landmark in the history of jazz fusion". It was praised for its "fusion of jazz, rock and blues" and "raw and powerful" sound. The album was a commercial and critical success and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. Many jazz and rock musicians have cited it as influential and it has been described as the "defining album" of the jazz fusion genre.
