After Motown closed its Hitsville studios in Detroit, Gaye was initially reluctant to follow the label to Los Angeles, but couldn't resist the opportunity to work in Hollywood. In 1973, he moved permanently to Los Angeles. On the album Trouble Man, Gaye showed his abilities as a jazz and blues composer as well as a soul personality.
