The first album released on Motown was "Hi...". We're the Miracles" (1961), followed by Marvin Gaye's debut studio album "The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye" from the same year. The album contains mostly newly arranged standards that show Marvin Gaye's enthusiasm for Nat King Cole and Ray Charles. After the release of this album, Gaye recorded three more albums of jazz covers, but they were not very successful with the audience of the time. The album, which was recorded in two weeks and released on June 8, 1961, contains more jazz than soul and has a very different sound than Gaye's later albums. This is the material on which his kingdom of soul and unique personal style were built.
