In his Belgian exile in the seaside town of Oostende, Marvin borrowed a beat from the European new wave scene, but under his hands it became something entirely new. On the anniversary edition of "Midnight Love," Gaye took his cue from Rick James, Cameo and Prince to compose "Midnight Lady," a supple funk ode to luxurious nightlife, dashing supergirls and sexual debauchery. On "Third World Girl," he shows his love for the recently deceased Bob Marley, interweaving faux reggae rhythms with shimmering synth-pop tones.
