In 1969, King Crimson laid the foundation for their reputation as a live band. Initially in front of hipsters, opinion makers and other musicians you might have met at places like the Speakeasy or The Marquee in London. The band's breakthrough into the mainstream public eye came when they opened for the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park in July that year. It is fitting, then, that the current reborn King Crimson played three sold-out shows at the Royal Albert Hall opposite the entrance to Hyde Park in late June 2019, almost 50 years after that concert. Then, as now, live performances are key to understanding the band. The current line-up, which is the longest surviving in Crimson's half-century history, began touring in 2014 and continues to this day. The band, often referred to as the best touring band in the world, has furthered its reputation with a series of live recordings that began with the mini-album Live at the Orpheum (2015) and continues with last year's CD/BluRay set Meltdown 3, which includes footage from 2017 shows in Mexico. The broad repertoire ranges from the debut album "In the Court oft he Crimson King" (including Moonchild, which was never performed live in 1969), tracks from the album "Lizard" (also never performed live at the time of its release), classic Crimson tracks from the albums "Islands", "Larks' Tongues in Aspic", "Red" and other studio albums, to tracks from Fripp's solo album "Exposure" ("Breathless"), Radical reinterpretations of material from the 80s and 80s. From 2011's Jakszyk, Fripp Collins album ("A Scarcity of Miracles", "The Light of Day") to newly written tracks for this line-up ("Meltdown", "Radical Action"), this 5-CD set provides a comprehensive overview of the last five years. The recordings come from selected concerts, starting with the band's first concert in Albany, New York in 2014 and ending with the band's penultimate concert in Tokyo in 2018, with each CD containing one concert for the entire year. CD 1 is completely mixed from multi-track tapes by Robert Fripp and Jakko Jakszyk. The other 4 CDs contain stereo recordings recorded by the band directly from the mixing desk, which in the opinion and ears of many die-hard fans of the band best represent the band with its live qualities. This set was previously only available at the band's recent 2019 shows and was in high demand.
