Wiener Philharmoniker: Wien LTD version on vinyl 2LP in limited edition. This particular edition was published in Germany in publishing company Sony Classical on 29. November 2019.
After the great success of the Berlin album "Du bist die Welt für mich" and a detour to Italy ("Dolce Vita"), Jonas Kaufmann's new album is a very personal tribute to the world-famous melodies of the waltz and operetta capital, and therefore also bears its name: Vienna. For this selection of world-famous hits from this city, no other orchestra is considered than the Vienna Philharmonic, a varied programme conducted by Ádám Fischer. Rachel Willis Sørensen could be found, among other things, as a partner in the duet for the title tune of the operetta "Wiener Blut". Jonas Kaufmann has always had a special relationship with Austria and Vienna. His grandmother had a penchant for light muse and preferred to sing evergreens by Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár or Robert Stolz - a pleasant contrast to his grandfather's passion for Wagner. As a child, Kaufmann spent most of his free time on his grandparents' farm in Tyrol, and he almost preferred Austrian television programming to German. He thus experienced the full range of Viennese entertainment - from Peter Alexander to Georg Kreisler. He enjoys imitating Hans Moser's inflections or taking on the role of Herr Karl (a.k.a. Helmut Qualtinger), and thus playfully acquires the Viennese dialect. Since then, Jonas Kaufmann has also loved Viennese songs and operettas. "For me, it was always music for a good mood," Kaufmann recalls, "when I had unloved duties like cleaning and vacuuming ahead of me as a student, all I had to do was put on 'Die Fledermaus' with Carlos Kleiber and a smile would immediately appear on my face." On his Vienna album, Jonas Kaufmann returns to his roots in more ways than one. His first professional theatre production - while still a student - was "A Night in Venice" in the 1993/94 season at the Regensburg Theatre. Kaufmann sang the role of Caramello in more than 30 performances. Not for nothing, then, did he record the tenor highlights of this Strauss operetta on his Vienna album alongside duets from "Die Fledermaus", "Wiener Blut" and Lehár's "Die lustige Witwe". As in the concert version of "Die Fledermaus" at the New Year's Eve concert in Dresden, his unique duet partner is Rachel Willis Sørensen. In addition to Kaufmann's first recordings of Johann Strauss titles, the new album contains a wide range of Viennese songs; the arc runs from Robert Stolz ("Im Prater blüh'n wieder die Bäume") through Peter Kreuder ("Sag beim Abschied leise Servus") and Hermann Leopoldi ("In einem kleinen Café in Hernals") to Georg Kreisler's "Der Tod, das muss ein Wiener sein". Of course, Vienna's album must not miss the city's not-so-secret anthem: Rudolf Sieczyski's "Vienna, the city of my dreams" - better known in the world as "Vienna, Vienna, only you".
Album spans genres Classical and Operetta. 180g Gatefold Limited Edition Vinyl.
