After becoming a rock star with his pioneering guitar work in The Yardbirds, Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice, Jeff Beck proved once again in 1975 that he could always surprise: he released a purely instrumental album and ventured into entirely new musical territory. Under the guidance of Beatles producer Sir George Martin, Beck and his brilliant collaborators Max Middleton (keyboards), Richard Bailey (drums) and Phil Chenno (bass) combined jazz, funk and rock on Blow by Blow. The result of this collaboration was very well received by critics and the public and is Beck's most successful album to date. Much of the credit for this success must surely go to the excellent song material: in addition to the great Beck and Middleton songs, Blow By Blow contains great renditions of She's a Woman and Stevie Wonder's Cause We've Ended As Lovers and Thelonius.
