Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist and composer. Hancock's improvisation is characterized by a sparkling "funky" style of playing and the use of distinctive cross rhythms. Many of his compositions have become classics and serve as a basis for improvisation for other jazz musicians. Mwandishi is one of Herbie Hancock's first departures from his traditional jazz sound. On this album, which was recorded in a single take on New Year's Eve, he crosses genre boundaries. Unlike his earlier works, he gives space to electronic effects, expanding his musical expression. Hancock's sextet is the most accomplished ensemble he has ever played with. With this work he opens new doors for jazz music as a whole. The music on Mwandishi is beautifully atmospheric and the long tracks give the band plenty of room for improvisation. A fantastic song concept with layers of sound, meaning and expression. Herbie Hancock is one of the most prolific jazz pianists of the 20th century. He has played with such greats as Donald Byrd and Miles Davis. He has a distinctive style that is always dynamic with variations between electronic and acoustic sounds. In principle, his work is characterized by a great fidelity to style. Thus, he has supported almost every development in R & B, funk and jazz, while remaining original and unmistakable.
